Audi A4 Design

Audi A4 is a medium car placed between Audi 3 and Audi 6.

Audi 4 was introduced in the end of 1994 as the successor of Audi 80 B4. Audi 4 becomes the third best sold automobile in Germany in 2006. It was outstripped by VW Goft and Opel Astra only.

Audi A4 B5 (8D type)

The design and the technical filling of Audi A4 B5 were several times changed in the course of production. The limo`s rear lamps design was changed in August 1996 for instance. The automobile`s keys were provided with internal and external profiles.

Decorative planks were placed on the doors. A radio code system replaced infrared system if talking about central locking. Locking and opening central locking button entered the standard equipment list. Audi Logo (both body types) was "deprived" of lower mudguards in the middle of 1997. Light-emitting diodes started to be used to illuminate the control board. Speedometer dial design was restyled. The steering wheel then looked more attractive, it became adjustable (4 positions).

The headlamps` glass became smooth and even. Xenon lamps were introduced. Fog headlamps were placed on the front bumper. Backing lamp`s ribbed glass was replaced for smooth white glass. Door handles design was changed. Magnetic switch for the trunk lid opening was introduced. A decorative plank was placed at the bottom of the trunk lid. Direction indicator lamps placed on the wings were also restyled. Windscreen washer nozzles were removed from the hood. Distinctive decorative holes appeared on the front bumper.

The midsection of the instrumentation panel looked different. The speedometer was illuminated white from beneath. CAN-BUS electronic system was introduced. The chassis and the suspension`s reinforcing members were also improved. ESP system was introduced.

The exterior and interior design of the models was also changed along with capacity boost. Let`s take bumpers` design for instance. The bumpers and the side panels were painted the same color as the body.

Capacious sporty Audi A4 B5 versions were transformed into 265-horsepower S4 model in September of 1997 and then (2000, July) this model was transformed into 380-horsepower RS4 Avant.

This exclusive RS4 Avant (it was put in production just before Audi A4 B5 was taken out of it) stands out for glittering matt aluminium mirrors. There were 6030 models produced all in all.

Audi A4 B6 (8E/8H type)

Bright side line and rounded "stern" separate second generation from the predecessor. The body reminds of its "older brother`s" one (4B). B6 became 68 mm longer, 33 mm wider, and 13 mm higher.

Improved front axle now boasts of numerous parts made of aluminium alloy. This light material allowed reducing the chassis` weight. The chassis therefore became 8.5 kg lighter than the predecessor`s.

Both B6 models are provided with a vee-type independent wishbone suspension of the rear axle that improves lateral stability, while the predecessor was provided with either front-wheel or all-wheel drive.

B6 exterior design didn`t undergo any considerable changes during the whole period of production. The bumpers and the side planks had been painted the same color as the body from 2003 (it used to be an option once).

Audi A4 B7 (8E/8H)

This model was officially planned to be 8E type and as result of numerous technical and exterior changes it was named B7. Frankly speaking, B7 looks really different thanks to its new body. The bumpers, the side lines, the headlamps, and the rear lamps were all restyled. The grille form was changed dramatically and now it is the feature of all medium Audi cars.

The design of the steering wheel, of the seats, and of the data panel was renewed. The saloon was transformed to resemble B6.

This model`s diesel versions showed their exhaust pipes again. S models` exhaust systems end with 4 O-shaped exhaust pipes unlike the preceding model`s.

What is more, B7 became 39 mm longer and 6 mm wider than B6.

Limos (4 doors) and station wagons (5 doors) were put into production at the same time. A cabriolet based on B7 platform was first introduced during the World Automobile Show in 2005, that is, in about a year after limo and Avant introduction. It was put in production in 2006.

The time for a new radio receiver and DVD player with MP3 function has come. Improved design and functions make this receiver different if comparing with the predecessors in terms of quality.

The navigation system was left unchanged. The radio control buttons were supplement with a chrome plank from the bottom. New headlamps provided with white direction indicators that go in S line package are an option. These changes can be noticed if looking at S and RS serial models.
